Training for Carers

Many people with whom ARCOS works are dependent on others for their health, welfare and quality of life. Carers including parents and partners are often left to cope throughout 24 hours, seven days a week without adequate training or practical support. ARCOS recognises the need for specialist carer training.

It is essential that carers possess the knowledge, understanding and requisite skills to support the individual in a comprehensive way and help them to be as independent as possible in each of the areas below:

  • Airway production through swallowing, throat clearing and coughing
  • Posture and mobility
  • Communication

Training is workshop based comprising self-experience, supervised work with the client concerned and theoretical background. It is carefully targeted to each individual’s needs.

Most of the training for relatives is provided free of charge, funded by grants and donations. During recent years the BBC Children in Need Appeal has enabled ARCOS to provide free training for those helping more than 270 disabled children in nurseries, schools, residential homes, respite care and hospices.

Illustrations of Course Feedback:

‘I’m so sorry I broke down, it was such a surprise, after all these years to see her able to change like that, swallowing without choking and holding the spoon a bit. I came along to the sessions because I didn’t want to be rude, I didn’t expect it to make any difference’
(Mother of very disabled teenager following training session)
