Equipment

ARCOS offers free trial, loan and rental of equipment. The equipment loan library is a huge asset, allowing people to benefit from the most recent technology. It is generously funded via grants and donations, for which we are very grateful. Six saddle seated wheelchairs were purchased thanks to a generous donation from Allied Dunbar.

Other equipment in the library includes many communication and swallowing aids:

The Lightwriter

Small and portable, the Lightwriter is a vital communication aid for many people with speech difficulties. The small keyboard or switches allows words to be typed, which are then displayed on a double-sided screen or 'spoken' by synthesized speech.

Dubby

Similar to the Lightwriter, the Dubby is compact, with a single screen and voice output facility.

Switches

Switches provide an alternative to conventional keyboard operation. The smallest of movements on a switch can activate a succession of links to allow access to a wide variety of communication aids and assistive devices. ARCOS has a range of switches for loan, including infra-red switches which can even be activated by eye blink. With future fundraising and donations, ARCOS hopes to expand its range of switches to enable severely disabled clients to benefit from this technology.

Neater-Eater

This equipment enables people with reduced or incoordinated movement including ataxia to independently feed themselves.

Visual Support for communication: Pictures and Symbols:

  •  Widget Software
  •  PECS (Picture Exchange System)

These materials are used with clients attending the ARCOS Centre. Both enable clients to use pictures and symbols to communicate ideas.

ARCOS also stocks a variety of specialist equipment for eating and drinking which can be bought from the ARCOS Centre in Malvern.
