| The Need for ARCOS |
|
ARCOS services are necessary to address the unmet needs of individuals with impaired communication, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties; such difficulties are caused by a range of developmental and acquired conditions and persist throughout life. The number of those afflicted is increasing due to a combination of advances in ante/peri natal care, acute medicine and longer life expectancy. However, there is insufficient specialised rehabilitation and inadequate long-term skilled support for this population. Consequently, individuals suffer increasing disability, deformity and pain over time due to the accumulation of secondary symptoms. Their quality of life and that if their families is reduced and at the same time there is an increased burden on statutory health and social services with increased financial cost to the community. Communication disabilities:
Eating, drinking (swallowing) disabilities:
“When people have a number of difficulties, the emphasis is often on walking first, rather than talking. However, it is clear that the ability to communicate effectively is an enormous contribution to independence and controlling one’s own life…” Helga Ryf, founder member of ARCOS on the effects of her stroke. |
