| About ARCOS |
|
The ARCOS mission: To promote and provide specialist training, comprehensive therapy and support for people with communication and/or swallowing problems, including those with multiple disabilities resulting from developmental or acquired brain injury. “It is estimated that there are 2.5 million people in the UK with speech, language and communication needs." (Source: SLCN) “Communication impairment is a hidden disability which is isolating and distressing. People often cannot explain the pain and frustration they feel. The loss of confidence and self-esteem can affect their personal and social relationships. Their disability can reduce their opportunities in education and employment." (Source: The Communications Forum) ARCOS is concerned with the right to communicate: ARCOS focuses on the client. It aims to complement and extend current services for children and adults with communication difficulties caused by developmental or acquired brain damage via a number of initiatives. The knowledge, understanding, skills and technology are available and expanding rapidly. However, access to information and specialist skills is problematic. In addition, public awareness of the nature of difficulties commonly arising from brain injury and the possibilities afforded by current knowledge, skills and technology is limited. "I was delighted to act as narrator for the 'Never Say Never' video." (Tony Robinson) |
